“While I collaborated with Joe on Salute Homecare’s financial and strategic initiatives, what most impressed me was his ability to multi-task so effectively. Salute Homecare ran smoothly and it was in large part to his operational acumen. Joe’s deep understanding of the drivers and trends in our industry led him to develop some of the most in-depth budgets, financial modelling and planning that I’ve seen in my career. He knows how to sit back and listen, encouraging different viewpoints to emerge, which really benefited our company. Joe is a passionate, talented leader, and a true professional.”

What do you do if you're a late career professional facing challenges in remote job searching?
Because I am a generalist who's worked in different industries, it's always taken me time to find my next challenge. What's key is having grit and perseverance. Staying positive—knowing you will succeed—is such an important attribute. We all have our bad days, but the key to get others to believe in you is to believe in yourself and your eventual success. It doesn't make a difference whether you're searching remotely for a job, working on a startup or doing something else: stay positive, be grateful for the opportunities you've had and keep plugging away.

How do you validate your start-up idea without revealing too much?
The law is highly complex, so it's important to hire the right lawyer, not just anyone. For example, even among patent lawyers, you'll want one with experience in your field. Many attorneys will provide an initial exploratory call to determine whether your product or service is able to be protected and whether you should pursue protection at some level.

How do you validate your start-up idea without revealing too much?
While your best feedback is from potential customers, practically speaking, there's a big difference between having an idea and actually acting on it. There are a lot of ideas, but very few actually make it to fruition. What's key is to figure out how to solve an identifiable problem and actually learn from responses, not merely fall in love with your solution.
